The Chinese use the name goji to identify a number of species. Typically it refers to Lycium varieties. It is known in the English speaking world as matrimony vine, wolfberry, or Chinese boxthorn. The plant is an evergreen shrub and grows best in regions that are subtropical and temperate. It is often used in folk medicine with the two most common species being Lycium barbarum and Lycium chinense. They are both members of the Solanaceae family or nightshade.

It is the fruit from which the medicinal extracts come. The leaves can be eaten for food. In many cultures, the use of goji has been used for a variety of medicinal uses. The Chinese use it with a variety of other botanicals for many benefits.
